A BLACK-LACQUER MATCHING
CANDLESTICK AND TRAY
WITH AN OIL DISH
Meiji era (1868-1912),
late 19th/early 20th century
The candlestick with a cylindrical stem
supported on a hemispherical base in the
form of a stylised chrysanthemum flower
lacquered in gold hiramaki-e and nashiji with
an exotic long-tailed bird and two butterflies
in flight and crowned by a chrysanthemum-
shaped finial mounted with a gilt receptacle
for holding the oil dish, 48.2cm (19in) high;
the lobed rimmed tray similarly lacquered with
the same design, 6cm x 33cm
(2 3/8in x 13in); each unsigned, accompanied
by a conventional red-lacquered oil dish, with
an inscribed wood storage box. (6).

late 19th/early 20th century
Supported on a removable, rectangular
cabriole-legged base, comprising two
pairs of hinged cupboard doors, one at
the top and one at the bottom, one set of
sliding doors, staggered shelves and two
drawers, decorated in gold takamaki-e,
hiramaki-e, kirikane, and Gyobu nashiji
with rural scenes depicting a waterfall or a
stream winding through thatched dwellings
on an embankment, the open surfaces in
the form of fans decorated with overlapping
assorted crests interwoven among autumn
foliage and flowers, the narrow sides
flanking the doors embellished with stylised
butterflies, the remaining sides with plum and
chrysanthemum blossoms echoing the front
of the stand, the reverse scattered with similar
assorted crests on a nashiji ground; unsigned.
The cabinet: 52.5cm x 47cm (20 5/8in x 18½in);
the stand: 17cm x 54cm (6 5/8in x 21¼in). (2).
