PROPERTY OF A PRIVATE ENGLISH COLLECTION (LOTS 139 - 141)
This collection of cloisonné and champlevé enamel works of art was
acquired by Sir Trevor Lawrence (1831 – 1913) and sold at Christie’s London
29 - 31 May 1916. These pieces were re-acquired at the sale by members of
Sir Trevor Lawrence’s family and have remained in the family since.

A CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL VASE, CONG
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The vase is decorated to each side with a central lotus enclosed by scrolling
foliage and further blossoms on a turquoise ground, with two sides each
mounted with a fnely cast lion-head ring handle. The neck and foot are
similarly decorated with scrolling fowers, framed by gilded scroll-band rims.

Private English Collection
The form of the present vase was inspired by archaic jade ritual objects
known as cong. These ritual objects have a circular core and a square
exterior, and were often carved with stylised masks between horizontal
registers around the corners.
