A SOAPSTONE ‘SQUIRREL AND GRAPES’ TEAPOT AND COVER
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
The globular teapot is fashioned with a slightly curved spout carved as a bird
and an openwork twisting strap handle. The body is carved overall in high
relief with squirrels clambering amongst leafy grape vines, which also form
the foot of the vessel. The domed cover is similarly decorated. The design is all
reserved on an incised wave ground, the base is decorated with a fower spray,
the incised designs are highlighted in gilt.
