8285 A group of miniature ivory figural carvings
18th/19th century
146 | BONHAMS The first a small plaque carved to both sides as a baby boy holding
a lingzhi fungus branch in one hand and a stick balancing a basket
of auspicious peaches in the other; the second a plaque carved in
delicate relief with a scholar mounted on a qilin standing behind a
figure holding a box; the third a figure of Shoulao holding a peach
in one hand and a dragon-topped staff in the other while standing
in front of an auspicious crane; the fourth a standing immortal with
two tufts of hair growing from the top his bearded head and a large
peach nestled in his hands, the surfaces showing remains of pigment;
the fifth a seated monk spooning food from his begging bowl, his
garment showing traces of pigment; and two other standing figures
with remains of brightly colored pigments, each with a drill hole for
attachment to another surface - one a scowling monk holding a book,
the other possibly depicting the long-haired Shide; together with a
deeply undercut model of a lion dog supporting a cub on its back
while grasping a hollowed ball under its right front paw. [8]

A group of eight small ivory carvings
18th-19th century
The first a circular footed stand reticulated as overlapping ruyi scepter
lappets that repeat as the feet; the second of crescent shape, carved
to one side with intricately worked flowering branches; the third of
circular form and slightly concave section, possibly part of a lid,
reticulated as interlaced strap-work of cloud collar form; the fourth
a miniature shoe with pale russet staining; the sixth, a horizontal
plaque of flattened C-scroll form intricately reticulated with figures in
a landscape setting; the seventh a pyramidal plaque carved in relief
with two beauties under a willow tree, the surfaces showing remains
of pigment; the seventh an oval-sectioned stand stained in green,
carved with bamboo and lingzhi fungus branches growing from a rock
stratum; the last a plaque of rounded rectangular form, reticulated and
carved to one side as bats and flower heads amid rope intertwined to
form two endless knots.

A group of nine miniature wood carvings
17th century and later
The largest a standing martial figure possibly depicting Tuowen,
Buddhist guardian of the North, as suggested by the pearl in his
left hand and handle of a sword or banner in his raised left hand;
the second a carved bamboo figure figure of Liu Hai riding a leaf,
his three-legged toad seated at the helm; the third and fourth pale
boxwood figures possibly depicting the standing and seated figures
of Hanshan and Shide, each with a projecting tenon at the base
for attachment to another surface; the fifth a circular-sectioned
incense or perfume container reticulated with a fu-lion finial as the
suspension loop and figural roundels reticulated on each face; the
sixth a reticulated figural panel depicting two warriors on horseback;
the seventh and eighth a pair of miniature boxwood shoes; the ninth
a miniature ovoid vase with figural frieze in high relief and mock animal
hand and ring handles; together with an oval lychee seed, the top of
its shell carved in relief with the Three Stars of Happiness. [10]
