A group of three carved wood containers
18th-19th century
The largest of oval-sectioned bamboo, carved with a gourd and
leafy vine design on the exterior walls, the horn and ivory cover and
matching base of domed shape; the second a two-layer cylindrical
bamboo tube carved in delicate relief with figures in a garden setting
on the exterior and in erotic embrace on the interior tube, the
cylindrical caps of ivory; the last a boxwood tube of square section
reticulated with a delicate relief with squirrels crawling on a grapevine
spread over a minutely worked lattice of ogival openings.

A large ivory figure of a standing scholar
19th century
The smiling figure shown looking upward, his hair, beard and knotted
cord belt all delicately line-incised and tinted with black pigment, the
ribbons on his cap and the hands clasped to his back also deeply
undercut; now attached to a pieced wood stand of rectangular section
with canted corners carved with lotus bands and inlaid in silver wire.
