A RED GLASS OVERLAY SNUFF BOTTLE WITH POETIC SEAL- A BLACKISH-BROWN GLASS OVERLAY ‘LONG’-CHARACTER
SCRIPT INSCRIPTION BOTTLE

Of flattened tall rectangular shape with tall neck, each main face with a Of flattened rounded shape, the dark overlay delicately carved with
seven-character seal-script followed by a seal, the narrow sides carved neatly-grooved dragon-headed ‘long’ characters to each main face
with chilong, all over a bubble-suffused (‘snowstorm’) ground. above a simple overlay at the oval foot ring and with lion-mask fixed-
2 9/16in (6.5cm) high ring handles at the shoulders on the narrow sides, all on a semi-
opaque bubble-suffused ground.

Each of the two main faces of this bottle features a seven character 1790-1850年 套黑料夔龍紋鼻煙壺
poetic inscription, followed by a carved seal. As follows:
A variety of different color overlay bottles were produced with this
來日花香堪益志 Awaiting the flowers’ fragrance nurtures aspiration, design, in which archaistic dragon key-pattern-decoration forms
(seal) Renyue the character for dragon, ‘long’. This example is actually rather well
carved, in fact more so than many of this group, suggesting it might
reversed by even be a product of the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century
rather than the tail-end of the Qing dynasty as much of this group is.
