A BAMBOO ROOT CARVING OF DONGFANG
SHUO
EARLY QING PERIOD, 17TH-18TH CENTURY
The bamboo root is finely carved in the round to depict Dongfang
Shuo reclining on a layered rock leaning back on his outstretched
right arm, grasping a branch of leafy peach in his right hand, the
left hand across his lap pointing towards the auspicious fruit. His
loose robes tied at the waist with a sash suspending and his hair
tied in a topknot and covered by a hat.
