     A LARGE DEHUA STANDING FIGURE OF
     GUANYIN

     REPUBLIC PERIOD, EARLY 20TH CENTURY

     The figure is elegantly modelled standing on a dragon’s head
     partially submerged in swirling waves, her detachable left hand
     holding an amphora, dressed in a voluminous robe with a
     bejewelled necklace spanning her chest, her hair tied in a high
     chignon behind a tiara moulded with a figure of Amitabha,
     covered overall with an even white glaze. Her back is impressed
     with a Xu Yunlin zhi seal mark.

     Xu Yunlin (1887-1940), or Xu Youyi, was a renowned ceramicist from
     Dehua, active during the late Qing to early Republic period. Born
     to a family of professional carvers, Xu excelled in modelling Dehua
     Buddhist figures.
