A RARE PAIR OF CARVED POLYCHROME LACQUER LOBED VASES
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
Each of the baluster vase is applied on the sides with a pair of gilt-bronze lion mask loose ring
handles, finely carved through the red and green layers to the yellow-ochre ground on each lobe
with a scene of scholar and attendant engaged in various leisurely pursuits including writing on
a rock cliff, drinking tea seated under the shades of trees, and observing the landscape, all within
panels separated by angular scroll. The neck is encircled by band of lotus bloom with scrolling
tendrils, repeated on the spreading foot.
