A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER ‘IMMORTALS’
HEXAFOIL BOX AND COVER

QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

The cover is finely carved with a central medallion depicting six of
the Eight Daoist Immortals in a wooded riverscape with moutains
and fenced terraces in the background, all reserved on a variously
patterned ground. The sides of cover are carved with six panels
enclosing flower and rock motifs and divided by meandering
lotus, repeated on the sides of the box. The interiors and the base
are coated with black lacquer.
