LACQUER ‘PEONY’ CIRCULAR BOX

MING DYNASTY, 15TH CENTURY
The gently domed cover is carved with a large
central peony bloom surrounded by saw-edged
leaves and buds extending over the gently curved
sides. The sides of the box is carved with a narrow
frieze of further flowers and leaves. The interiors
and recessed base are lacquered black.

A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER
‘PEACOCK’ TRAY
MING DYNASTY, 15TH-16TH CENTURY
The dish has shallow rounded sides that rise to a
stepped rim. The interior is carved with a peacock
standing on rocks, with wings and tail feathers fully
extended amidst lotus sprays. The reverse is carved
with a continuous floral scroll. The underside with
incised characters, Zhang Cheng zao.
