     A WHITE JADE ‘MYTHICAL BEAST’ SEAL

     QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

     The rectangular seal is surmounted by a finial in the form of a
     single-horned mythical beast standing foursquare. The seal face is
     inscribed with the characters chun si ‘contemplating spring’. The
     stone is of an even semi-translucent white tone, the face of the
     beast highlighted by an area of russet.
