PROVENANCE
A Japanese private collection, Kobe, acquired circa 1930s
The signature Yongqing on this tea pot refers to Chen Yongqing,
a renowned potter of Yixing wares active during the Tianqi and
Chongzhen periods. It is extremely rare to find extant Yixing tea wares
by Chen Yongqing, and tea pots of such large size. The individualistic
spirit of Chen Yongqing can be discerned through the cursive script
incised on the current tea pot, as inscriptions in regular script are
much more commonly seen amongst Yixing wares.
A Yixing tea pot of almost identical shape, size and design, also
bearing a Yongqing signature but with a different poetic inscription
in cursive script, is in the Hong Kong Flagstaff House Museum of Tea
Ware, illustrated on the museum webpage.
