A CARVED AGATE WASHER

QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)

The washer is carved to the exterior in high relief and pierced
with pine, prunus and bamboo branches, ‘three friends of winter’,
with a squirrel on one of the branches. The pine needle clusters,
prunus blooms, and squirrel are cleverly carved utilising the
orange-red inclusion of the stone. The material is of a translucent
greyish tone.
