           Ming Dynasty
           The bearded Daoist Immortal standing slightly turning to the right,
           holding in front castanets, smiling and wearing a tall scholar’s hat with
           its pair of ribbons resting on his shoulders, the long flowing robes
           adorned at the hems with lingzhi shaped scrolls, wood stand.

           Cao Guojiu is one of the Eight Immortals and was supposedly a Song
           dynasty official who is usually depicted wearing official’s dress and
           holding castanets. He is the patron of actors. See a related set of eight
           bronze Immortals, including Cai Guojiu, Ming dynasty, 17th century,
           illustrated in Bronzes de la Chine imperiale des Song aux Qing, Paris,
           2013, no.106. See also a similar bronze figure of Cao Guojiu, Ming
           dynasty, illustrated in China’s Renaissance in Bronze: The Robert

           Late Ming Dynasty
           The God of War cast standing upright with his right hand holding his
           official belt, his left hand hidden within his long voluminous sleeve, the
           face with stern expression beneath a scholar’s cloth cap, pierced with     600
           apertures for the insertion of hair. 21.5cm (8 1/2in) high.

           TWO BRONZE FIGURES OF IMMORTALS
           Ming Dynasty
           The first probably representing Lü Dongbin, wearing a billowing belted
           tunic and tabbed hat, the hands clasped and concealed beneath
           voluminous sleeves, a sword and hollowed gourd flask slung across
           his back, 13.5cm (5 1/4in) high; the second similarly robed, the right
           hand raised and face turned to the left with smiling expression, some
           gilt traces remaining, 18cm (7 1/8in) high, fitted stands. (4).
