TWO SOAPSTONE FIGURES OF ZHONGLI QUAN
17th/18th century
Each finely carved standing wearing a long robe tied at the waist,
decorated with incised clouds and floral motifs embellished with
pigment and gilt, one hand holding a fan with tassel attached to the
end and the other pendent by the side within the long sleeve, the
smiling face with a full beard beneath the finely-incised hair pulled up
into two buns at the top, one with stand.
The larger 21.3cm (8 3/8in) high. (3).

TWO SOAPSTONE FIGURES OF SHOULAO
17th/18th century
Each figure of the Star God of Longevity finely carved standing,
wearing long robes with incised clouds, peaches and Shou characters,
one arm cradling a ruyi sceptre, the smiling faces with downcast eyes
and long beard below tall foreheads, both on a separate later stand.
The taller, 29cm (11 3/8in) high. (4).

十七/十八世紀 壽山石雕壽老 一組兩件
Compare with a related soapstone figure of Shoulao, 17th/18th
century, illustrated by B.von Herbert, Schätze Chinas aus Museen der
DDR, Hildesheim, 1990, no.131. A very similar but smaller soapstone
figure of Shoulao, 18th century, was sold at Christie’s London, 15 June 653
1999, lot 134.
