                 A RARE MOTHER-OF-PEARL-
                 INLAID BLACK LACQUER
                 STATIONERY CHEST

                 QING DYNASTY, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

                 The chest is inlaid with finely carved mother-
                 of-pearl set against a black lacquer ground on
                 the upper surface to depict a garden scene, in
                 which two groups of scholars are admiring
                 the moon. The front side is decorated with
                 figures at leisure on a garden terrace under a
                 full moon, the other sides with various floral
                 sprays. The front facing panel is removable
                 to reveal four fitted drawers underneath a
                 shallow tray.
