The nely executed illustration in narrative format depicting
King Dasaratha consulting with sage Vasistha in the upper
register and the sage exiting the palace in the lower register as
he is led away by the King’s trusted charioteer Sumantra.
The scene is set at the beginning of the epic Ramayana and
portrays King Dasaratha’s quandary at the risk posed to
his sixteen year old son Rama who has been requested by
the powerful sage Vishwamitra to accompany him to his
forest abode and vanquish the demons there who have been
disturbing his penance.
