Westerners make frequent eye contact with each other to show that they are interested in
what the other person is saying. Doctors should spend the majority of their time with a
patient actually looking at the patient, not at notes or test results. Leaning slightly forward
when talking to a person is another way to show interest in what that person has to say.
Occasionally saying “Mmm” while the person is talking is a sign that you are listening and
have understood what the person is talking about.
