Through Space
for live code
oming across live cod-
ing and music was very
Cunexpected, as I was
not aware of such thing. I
have a major interest on the
different means that music Alongside coding, a
can be created, and I would new concept came along,
never have thought that cod- generative music. Both con-
ing would be an approach cepts work well together, and
that I would take. I decided to explore them. I
had previously come across a
similar concept to generative
music, but instead of a piece
being constantly created, a
piece would loop, thus, re-
sulting in a very controlled
piece which would last forev-
er.
NOTE
Looping is a common
B. Eno- Ambient 1: Music for Airports technique when writing music
for videogames.
B. Eno- Spore: Galaxy Ambience
I was mostly influenced by Brian Eno’s Music for Airports. Different from his work, I
introduced more distinct layers to expand the variety of material used, resulting on an in-
creased randomness overall. In addition, his works on the videogame Spore was also an
influence; Brian Eno adopted a generative system for the soundtrack of this videogame, in
addition, one of the stages of the game occurs in space and different galaxies. Whilst Bri-
an Eno’s work present a bright soundscape, my idea for space was the opposite.
