Through Wind
for solo flute
he first thought/sound
that came to my mind
Twhilst working on this
piece was of a “heavy ac-
cented breathy flute”. I was
aware that the sound that
I was aiming for was more
common on Eastern tradi-
tions, specifically in the Japa-
nese traditional Imperial Noh
and Kabuki theatre. I was in-
terested on the Nohkan flute
and decided to incorporate
some of its techniques into
my piece. This can mainly be
found with the use of force- Y. Kano - Wind God and Thunder God
ful breath, different vibrato
speeds and note bending.
which occurs throughout my
piece.
Inspired by the nohkan
flute, I decided to have a look
on contemporary flute scores.
The work Voice for solo flute
by Tōru Takemitsu and Etude 1
Wind Tones, For the Contem-
porary Flutist by Wil Offer-
mans were scores I referred
to often, as they partially in-
T. Takemitsu - Voice, for flute solo capsulated the "breathy" idea
I initially had. Furthermore,
the Takemitsu score had pre-
cisely one of the articulation/
techniques I was looking for
(forceful breath mixed with
sound without tonguing)
when researching about the
Nohkan flute.
