NOTE
In a similar manner to
the works that influenced me,
my composition also loops,
and that is intentional, as I
felt that this would be the
most appropriate decision.
This is a technique that is still
used nowadays, even though,
recently there has been a rise
on dynamic music, access to
such feature is still limited.
N. Uematsu - Flowers Blooming In The
Church
This piece allowed me to try and approach compos-
ing in different ways. Firstly, I shifted my way of thinking.
Instead of prioritizing the music, I aimed to focus on the ex-
perience I wanted to bring to the player (videogame). Thus,
leading me to make the piece “loopable”. By employing a
more colourful use of harmony and instrumentation, the
piece becomes more interesting, leading the player to not
get bored easily with the looped music.
Furthermore, this was the first piece in which I pre-
pared the score after the piece was composed. Opposed
to using a notation software from the start, I opted to try a
different workflow, by writing all music in a Digital Audio
Workstation first. This action allowed me to explore more of
what preparing a mock and writing music for media is like,
though I must admit that I prefer to look at my music as a
score rather than coloured MIDI blocks.
Finally, this piece led me to an opportunity to work
on my first videogame original soundtrack. I am now work-
ing as a composer for a game, which is being developed
by some students from Birmingham City University.
