where the teacher teaches through a system of reinforcement or

            explains the material to the students, gives time  to practice by

            giving  the  students  one  or  many  sample  problems,  and  give


            feedback under the teacher’s control and guidance.


            2.   Steps in Conducting the Audio-lingual Method

                Since the audio-lingual  method is p r i m a r i l y   an o r a l


            approach to l a n g u a g e   teaching,   it  is  not  surprising  that

            the   process   of   teaching involves  extensive  oral instruction.

            As far as possible, the target language is used as the medium of


            instruction,  and  translation  or  use  of  native  tongue  is

            discouraged.   Classes  of  ten  or  less  are  considered  optimal,


            although  larger classes  are  often  the  norm.  Brooks,  as  cited

            in  Richards  and  Rodgers  (1999: 58-59),   list   the   procedures


            that    the    teacher    should    adopt   in   using    audio-  lingual

            method, those are:


                1.   Lesson   begins   with   the   modeling   of   the   speaking

                    material    by    the  teacher  and   the   students    follow
