Florida’s Social Ecological Model for
Suicide Prevention
The 2012 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (National Strategy) used a Social Ecological Model to
represent risk and protective factors associated with suicide risk. The idea of the model is to demonstrate how
Florida can decrease risk factors associated with suicide and increase the awareness and usage of protective
factors. Following the National Strategy’s model, the Statewide Office for Suicide Prevention created Diagram 1:
Florida’s Social Ecological Model for Suicide Prevention. The model includes each strategy identified in the
Action Plan and the risk factors identified by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
