Bitter/Sweet/Refreshing
I arrive in Columbia and on the request of my friends at Kew, we are in search of the
prickly pear. We find samples but they are infested with small parasites. Whilst
brushing them off the fruit & squashing the little bugs underfoot I am delighted to find
a truly wonderful dye of the colour red.
Thinking immediately of my paramour ‘The Divine Sarah Bernhardt’ and her penchant for
scandalous cosmetics, I have spotted a chance to further win her affections. I have
instructed my team of reprobates to make a sample of the dye in the shape of a pen
using the wax from my bees allowing the Divine Sarah to apply it directly to her lips.
Miss Bernhardt was indeed grateful - she wrote to me later to congratulate me on such a
fine product calling it her ‘love pen’ after our former romance. Her new fiancé was
equally delighted with the colour and ordered ninety nine lipsticks for her.
It was such a bitter sweet ordeal for me; it reminded me of a friend from Italy
‘Gaspare’ who is looking for a red colouring for a bitter aperitif he is developing.
