Tropical/Sweet/Refreshing dandy
By a stroke of complete luck, we land in Rio de Janeiro just in time for their festival of
lent. I have discovered that there are over two thousand different names for the local
sugar cane distillate and in a pique of madness, I accept a wager from my travelling
companions to find them all by the end of the Rio Carnival.
A week of unprecedented debauched excess ensues with the local cane spirit having me
firmly in its grasp.
I eventually return at the end of Carnivale a gibbering wreck, naked and bedecked in a
headdress of a thousand feathers.
Of all the multitude of spirits I have sampled, the only one I can remember is ‘Bafo-de-
Tigre’ or tiger’s breath which is precisely how my mouth felt the next morning.
