We have landed on the North Island shores of New Zealand to restock. As I am
attempting to procure as many specimens as possible to sell to zoos and museums across
the Empire, I have left the crew to trade with the local Maori chieftain, Tioni Topi
Patukiwhile whilst I take the opportunity to search for some of the unusual flora and
fauna that populates this verdant land.
Our mission was a resounding success with the chieftain’s daughter as our guide who
pointed out a bird with an exquisite curved beak and white tipped tail feathers believing
it was the ground dwelling cousin of the fowl, the Kiwi.
We resulted in appropriating several hundred of these feathered creatures to return
with but on setting sail, we quickly discovered that unfortunately, the birds did not like
sea travel and they all promptly died of seasickness.
We returned to the shore to try to restock the birds but not one more could be found.
I fear, with a sense of dismay and guilt, that our attempt to acquire the birds may have
ultimately led to their untimely extinction. Finding this to be true would trouble me for
years to come.
