We have landed on the island of Madagascar on a twin mission both to secure trading
partnership with the newly crowned Queen Ranavalona III and to find specimens of exotic
plants to restock the gardens of Kew.
I meet the new Queen and she has offered to travel inland with us to help in our
endeavour whilst at the same time visiting her subjects.
The young Queen has brought me to a forest of ancient trees rumoured to be thousands
of years old. Strange monkey-like creatures play here, they run on their hind legs as if
they are mocking the way we walk. I am told the animals are lemurs and the trees,
Baobabs. I collect some seeds whilst laughing at the strange beasts and gazing at not only
the beautiful forestry but also at the Queen whom I am growing more and more
enamoured with.
As we stroll through the strange landscape, the Queen explains that she is concerned
with the French attempt to install the tyranny of colonial rule. Realising the
opportunity to make a buck and return once again into my mother’s good books, I draft a
trade arrangement to help cement the bond between our two Queens.
With my trip to the island a resounding success, I set sail for mainland Africa with a
potential trade deal in vanilla, superb exotic fauna specimens for Kew and the gift of a
weird bug eyed monkey from Queen Ranavalona III.
