P. 33
BARGELLO: Why? There’s nothing behind me. There can’t be,
because I’m outside the biggest thing there is. I think so, anyway.
(slowly turns, looks) Oh, no! What are those tiny bits of light out there?
MINIMAX: Those are other galaxies. We are just on the edge of one
of them.
BARGELLO: Now, hold on a moment, Minimax. This is starting to
sound familiar. What is bigger than a galaxy?
MINIMAX: A cluster of galaxies.
BARGELLO: And what’s beyond all the clusters of galaxies?
MINIMAX: Quasars. And that’s the outer limit, as far as I know.
BARGELLO: Great! (gets in) Point out the nearest quasar, and we’ll
zip right out there!
MINIMAX: It’s hard to see from here, but I have a built-in telescope.
Okay, shine the light this way. (points; light goes on; effects)
BARGELLO: (turns off light; barrier comes down) Well, this is it. Right,
Minimax?
MINIMAX: I don’t know, Great Bargello. You are the leader,
remember?
BARGELLO: I never forget it! And here is where I make myself
even more famous. I can see the headlines when I return with this
photo: “Bargello Expedition Makes Big Discovery.” Come on, let’s
do our work and get going: I’m hungry!
MINIMAX: (both get out, go through barrier) Well, is this the edge of the
Universe, the biggest thing there is?
BARGELLO: Of course! Everything is behind us. I can’t see any
more little specks of light out there: can you?
MINIMAX: No, not immediately. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t
any. And even if we never saw any more stars out there, we still
couldn’t take the picture.
