Popcorn in heat.
Like the next piece, this word-picture translates the mundane
world into something else by means of semantic trickery. Indeed,
the two sorts of noise portrayed here are aurally similar; but the use
of the biological terms “cry” and “in heat” lead the reader’s mind to
animalize gravel and popcorn into wild beasts in the mating season.
