Into the World
Toward the sun
The hanging fruit
At midnight grows.
This purely imagistic piece gets an added twist from the tension
between the mystical mood gained on first impression and the later
intellectual realization of the trivial tautology involved. The
mysterious aspect comes from the astronomically-disorienting
juxtaposition of “sun” and “midnight,” and the ominous sound of
“hanging.” Since our unconscious idea of arboreal growth is toward
the sun during the day, we are well set-up for the surprise of a
strictly factual description of that process at night. The three lines
can go in any order; Gluckman may have shuffled them a few times,
this one struck him as best.
