Into the Cosmos

                    Cosmollified

              Here’s what entropy and
              Expansion are about:

              Whatever’s running down
              Is also running out.

The cosmologists have mollified us with homely metaphors of
totality, from giants upholding the firmament to epicycling crystal
gears to a rising loaf of raisin bread. The second stanza defines, in
simple terms, the recondite concepts of the first; it also suggests an
interdependence of function or observational tautology. The
apparent dilution of mass-energy in spacetime has also led to wild
speculation about the beginning and end of “The Universe”—
begging the usual questions about illogically-real boundaries (one of
         Gluckman’s pet peeves).
