Finally, an ironic image. Superficially, the words flatly depict
foreign visitors setting the apertures of their camera lenses
preparatory to viewing some ancient ruins. But it is the City of the
Sun they are about to enter, a sacred capital more dazzling than
profane and unbelieving eyes may safely gaze upon. Now the
mechanical attempt to limit the exposure to light becomes a vain
and ignorant gesture of self-protection on the part of a convoy of
captive barbarians, bound for sacrifice.
