The Big Idea – Act 1
CLOWN 1: Because I’m trustworthy. I’m absolutely incapable of
being logical about my impulses.
CLOWN 2: And I’m absolutely incapable of being impulsive about
my logic.
CLOWN 1: Great! Between us, we’re absolutely incapable of anything!
CLOWN 2: Oh, what a relief! I feel so liberated!
CLOWN 1: Now we’re in the right condition to attend that meeting:
stupid, silly, sarcastic, and suspicious.
CLOWN 2: Speak for yourself, you feeble-minded oaf. None of
those terms applies to me; I’m smart, serious, sweet, and
sympathetic.
CLOWN 1: Then you’re in no condition to attend a meeting.
CLOWN 2: Why not?
CLOWN 1: Well, first of all, smart: you know too much; second,
serious: you can’t take a joke; third, sweet: everyone else will think
you’re a phony; and fourth, sympathetic: you won’t stick up for your
own point of view.
CLOWN 2: Whereas...
CLOWN 1: I am stupid, so I can be convinced of anything; silly, so
my opinions will be rejected; sarcastic, so I will make lots of enemies;
and suspicious, so I won’t trust anybody.
CLOWN 2: I see your point. Well, I’ll just have to hide my true
nature.
CLOWN 1: And I shall hide my false nature. Then nobody will be
able to tell us apart.
CLOWN 2: Nobody will be able to tell us anything.
CLOWN 1: Great! Now we’re really in good condition!
CLOWN 2: So, let’s go! After you, my friend. (points to cave)
