The Big Idea – Act 1
CLOWN 1: Oh, no, after you. You’re in better condition, really.
CLOWN 2: I don’t want to be first.
CLOWN 1: Me neither.
What is this foolishness
With which we have been cursed?
Why must we always mess
Around with what is worst?
CLOWN 2:
As now, about to be
In that darkness immersed,
We’re inflated with glee
And laughter fit to burst!
CLOWNS 1 & 2:
Don’t you think it’s funny
Neither wants to be first?
CLOWN 1:
Do you think we would mind
In a cavern so vast,
Quite suddenly to find
Humorless snakes are massed?
CLOWN 2:
No! They can’t take a joke;
So we’ve got them out-classed:
On our antics they’ll choke
As if they had been gassed!
CLOWNS 1 & 2:
On this note we’ll proceed,
Since we both can be last!
(CLOWNS enter cave together, arms linked)
HALFWIT 1: Now we know there is a meeting.
HALFWIT 2: Too bad it isn’t an eating.
