Page 50 - Lulu and Bob in Verbo City

“So if we put it together, it reads, ‘Picking brains and seeking help
might succeed’. Okay, let’s move on.” Bob polished off the carapace
and plastron. “Tasty!”
“‘Tasty’?” Lulu stopped, pencil poised. “How do you get that from
what is obviously a paddle?”
“Sorry. You really should eat more cookies, Sis: plenty left in there.
Anyway, if it isn’t ‘paddle,’ it might be an oar—which could mean
‘or’.”
“‘Oar’ or ‘or’ or ‘ore’. We’ll determine which from the context.”
Lulu absently plucked a dodo from the container and snapped off its
tail feathers. “Then there’s a calendar page and an insect. Another
easy one: ‘May’ plus ‘be’: ‘maybe’.”
Bob squinted. “I see two linked faces next. The first has the
eyebrows emphasized; the second has musical notes emanating from
its mouth. ‘Eyebrow singing’. No, how about ‘highbrow singing’,
therefore ‘opera’?”
“Cute,” said Lulu, “but too complicated. It must be ‘browsing’. It’s
followed by ‘A’, the indefinite article, and a compound: a sports
official plus letter ‘R’ plus more insects.”
“Oh, that has to be a referee, and those are ants. Referee-R-ants.
‘Reference’! And the last word is Uncle’s favorite, ‘book’.”
