She finished writing the line: “‘Total concentration you realize’.
That’s not a complete sentence; why did Uncle stop there? Well, let’s
see what’s on the fourth line.”
“I’ve already got the first part: the light switch is pointing to ‘off’
and it is added to the numeral ‘10’. So it makes ‘often’.” Bob
shrugged. “What’s next?”
“What’s next is my turn,” said Lulu sharply. “Or did you forget our
agreement?”
“I was referring to the cookie jar: it’s an Abingdon Island tortoise.”
“Oh.” Lulu took her turn at being apologetic. “Sorry. Well, on the
rebus we have the word ‘is’ followed by a couple of ‘U’s inside a
universal sign of negation, the slashed circle. That means ‘U’s are not
allowed. No ‘U’s. Might be a sound-alike for ‘no use’.”
Bob stopped chewing. “Then the numeral ‘4’, then a ring plus ‘ing’.
That’s dead obvious: ‘for ringing’. He snapped the head off the
tortoise for emphasis.
Lulu nodded. “It ends simply enough: ‘the’ and a bell. Now we
have enough to see a pattern, I believe.”
