Page 43 - Lulu and Bob in Verbo City
P. 43
“Let me see that. Please?”
Lulu took the sheet from her unresisting brother—whose attention
had been transferred to the large jar of extinct animal crackers
Bunster had used as ballast for the note—and read aloud the brief
heading paragraph.
“‘Kids: I’m sorry I blew a fuse during our little game. You really are
second to none, and I have a couple of gifts for you! See you next
year—okay? Bunster’.”
“Oh, boy!” Bob had extracted a passenger pigeon and was nibbling
at its beak. “It doesn’t get any better than this: cookies and presents.
Or are the cookies the presents?”
“No.” Lulu was puzzled. “We must assume the rest of the message
is yet another word game Uncle has devised for us. If we solve it
before we have to leave, then we get whatever he’s giving us.
Otherwise, he’ll know we aren’t smart enough to do it.”
“If he can dream it up, we can wake it up,” mumbled Bob, ejecting
crumbs. “But what is it? Looks like hieroglyphics from here.”
