Recounting the Binary Neeks
“Well, what is it, Lieutenant?” the Languex interpreted. “I’m very
busy. I should be with our leader , in case he has any last t requests.”
“I’m very sorry, and ask your forgiveness, 10, but this matter is
most urgent—”
“Never mind that numerical nonsense, Lieutenant. You can call
me Bagpipe Ambler now, if you wish. What is your business?”
“As you know, I have had many discussions with 1 (your leader,
Three-whistle Trotter). Lately, due to the impending crisis, he has
been telling me about a decision he needs to make before it is too
late. I’m sure you know what I mean, the ternary system. Now, since
it seems he will go ahead with his plan, I feel it is my duty as PKU
representative to tell you, his successor, that we do not like his idea
and protest it in the strongest possible terms.”
Bagpipe Ambler abruptly stopped flexing his limbs. He blinked
several times. “Ah, yes,” he replied. “You are against his...ah, what
exactly did he tell you about his decision, Lieutenant?”
“Oh, I’m sure he didn’t tell me half as much as he told you. He’s
old, to be sure, but I could tell he was holding a lot back from me.
Anyway, he told me it would solve everything; but after studying it
for a while, I’m certain my organization will not be happy with it, and
I hope to prevail upon you not to implement it.”
The old Neek was paying close attention now to Lugo’s words, and
ambled up closer to the human.
“Here,” said Lugo. “I’ve taken the liberty of making a diagram of
what your society would look like if Three-whistle Trotter has his
way.”
He took a large folded sheet of paper from a pocket and opened it
slowly. Then he held it out so the Neek could see what was on it: a
very large, clear illustration.
