were raptly attentive to the evangelist’s message.
“My friends, as I have told you so many times, the Devil does not
sleep and he does not miss any opportunity to push you off the
straight and narrow path of true religion. I have shown you the Devil
at work in our schools, in our newspapers and magazines and movies,
even in the highest offices of our government—and you have
responded. Yes! Praise the Lord, you have responded! Our good
work continues, thanks to you and the help you have given our
ministry. And after you have heard from Mary, you will once again be
inspired to renew your faith in us, for it is only with your assistance—
and the strength of God—that we are able to bring this woman forth
to confront the powers of darkness and evil.”
Camera two faded in with a slowly receding shot of Jack standing
at his Plexiglas pulpit, his arms raised in benediction or menace. “Yes,
in a few moments, my friends, you will hear, in her own words, how
an innocent young woman was seduced by worldly temptations into
joining a demonic conspiracy! At last we have proof positive that the
so-called women’s rights movement is nothing more than a cover for
greed and murder! Yes, it is true! A group of airline nurses, directed
by Satan himself, are responsible for spreading the scourge of our
century, AIDS, among the homosexuals of our nation and of the
world, in order to seize greater power and influence, and take over
key positions in our society!”
A muffled muttering broke out in the audience.
“Yes, my friends,” continued McCracken, not a hair out of place
despite his extravagant gestures, “I know it is hard to believe. But
now this fiendish plot is uncovered—perhaps in time to put an
end to it, in time to stop these criminal feminists from killing again!
