Levi cursed his luck, realizing too late that he had not staked out an
escape route in this unfamiliar terrain. Billy Bob hit a lawn sprinkler-
head and went tumbling; he regained his footing and raced across the
street in blind terror, a dog at his heels. Eddie dashed here and there,
hopping and stumbling until he forgot why, turning—hackles
raised and ears back—to confront his pursuer, then turning tail and
hobbling off in a new direction.
