been discriminated against. So we got back in our car and left—real
          fast.
All was going well until one day, my employers had a big fight. The
husband pulled a gun on his wife. I don't know if it was loaded or not,
but we were so scared, we decided to leave—with the wife begging us
not to go. We had to call the cops. For some reason, he did not get
          charged.
We left and found an apartment in Toronto. Life in Toronto was very
interesting. Before climate change, winter was terrible. There would be
mountains of snow everywhere. We would hear of whiteouts up north,
which meant the snow was so heavy and the wind so strong that it was
hard to see where you were driving.
One evening, my very smart husband suggested we go check it out. So
we drove up Keele Street all the way until there was only farmland. The
wind was blowing, and the snow was blinding. Cars were slipping and
sliding. We carefully turned around and came back, promising never to
          do that again.
I started to get some disturbing news from home in the country, where
my little girl was staying with my stepfather and his wife. She had
become a teenager and was giving a lot of trouble. They were coping
well until my stepfather’s wife, by this time, was losing her mind. So I
had to ask someone to go get my daughter, who was still living with
          them.
