     CHAPTER FOURTEEN
                        My Children Resisted Me
          B
ecause I had to literally run away for my life, my tormentor
took the privilege of filling the children’s heads with lies
about me. What happened was, I had to escape by night,
hoping that when he came home, I would be long gone. But that night,
he didn’t come home at all. I later found out that the children were all
alone until the sitter came the next day. So, they all came up with chips
          on their shoulders.
In order to bring them all up, I had to get married real quick. And
because they resented me, my husband resented them, so they preferred
to live with my tormentor, their father. Although a few good people
who knew my situation back then would tell them the truth, it took
years for them to truly understand.
As for my son, nobody truly loved him as much as I did. It was only by
God’s grace that he was kept out of trouble, out there in Jamaica. Those
were the years when young people were dying like flies. But he kept it
together and stayed safe. Over time, he became a real big brother to
them all. My son is such a good person; he never judged me at any time.
