Chapter Nineteen
No Good-Bye
Following my great solo adventure in the Caddy (and no, I
did not get pulled over!), Mom came home. For the first week
she did really well. She was even able to sit outside in the
backyard with us. Most of her time was spent in bed so Vian
and I crawled in beside her and watched TV. Can’t really say we
actually watched much of what was on. It was just a nice excuse
to snuggle up and be close. Just the three of us.
Sadly, that glorious week has ended. Yesterday she was in
so much pain we had no choice but to call for the ambulance.
Again. She can’t handle the pain like she used to and her lungs
are shot. They keep filling up with fluid and constantly need to
be drained. My poor mother.
Today, when Mike gets off work, we go to visit her. She is
sitting up, talking, acting strong like she is bouncing back, just
like she always does. I figure she just needs a few days and then
she’ll be home with us again. We visit and chat as she eats her
dinner. She doesn’t say much as she tries to force down the
bland hospital food. It’s obvious she is getting tired. The nurse
will soon be in to ready her for bed.
“I hope you have a good sleep tonight, Mom.” I hate to
leave her but I know it’s time to let her rest.
Vian and I take turns bending down to give her a big hug.
There isn’t quite so much to hug anymore. I’m careful not to
squeeze too hard.
“Thanks, Honey, I hope so too. I’ll see you girls tomorrow.
I love you.”
