Chapter Twenty-Six
fact, every time he calls and says he’s coming home it’s always at
least two hours later when he finally arrives. Sometimes more!
And his staff? Some of the waitresses are just a bit too friendly
with him. I’m sure he doesn’t mind at all. But I do!
“Anybody hungry? Feeling like a nice juicy steak?” Hudson
stands up, a massive grin on his face.
“I think we’re ready.” Ken and Brenda stand too, excited for
the next part of our evening.
“I’m not really all that hungry,” I purr contentedly. “But sure,
whatever. We can go now if you’d like. You’re the birthday boy.”
I am always pretty agreeable and right now I need someone
else to make the decisions.
As cold as it is outside, I don’t think we’re feeling any pain
as we climb into the car. The steakhouse isn’t far, no doubt a very
good thing considering our current condition. I am buzzing
like a chainsaw. I’m also starting to feel paranoid. Pot can do
that to me, especially if we’re going out somewhere. Dining out
high is something I’ve done many times, but the added buzz of
the coke is taking its toll. I am pretty out of it.
The cute blonde hostess greets us merrily and soon the
four of us are cozy in a corner booth. I look around the empty
restaurant. “It’s sure not very busy, is it?”
“It’s midweek, that’s why,” the bubbly hostess responds,
handing us menus.
Oh dear, did I just say that out loud? I thought I was talking
to myself.
We’re all laughing and celebrating Hudson’s birthday. This
is so much fun. Feels so great just to be out. It’s pressure-time
at school. This kind of night just lets you leave it all behind.
We give our waitress our drink and food orders and keep on
laughing.
Wow. She’s back already? That was fast.
