Social PlatformS

Is your use of social media hurting your chances of
getting a job, or is it actually helping you get the job you
want? Let us go through it in greater depth.

            ARE YOUR EMPLOYERS CONCERNED
            ABOUT YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITIES?

You spend a significant amount of time on social media
platforms looking up old pictures and posts shared by your
friends. Do you think employers have time to sift through
social media for potential employees and candidates?
Indeed, they do and already are. The use of social media
platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram is
becoming an increasingly important component of hiring
and employment decisions made by human resource
managers and employers. According to CareerBuilder
survey, 70% of employers screen potential candidates
using their social media accounts (CareerBuilder Hiring
Solutions, 2018). This figure will only rise if the current
rate of use of social media platforms continues.

Don’t worry if you’ve already stopped reading this and are
in the process of deleting all of your college photos from
Facebook. There is some ray of hope here. Employers
use of social media in the hiring process poses a risk
for job seekers, but also an opportunity to differentiate
            themselves from the competition.

Before you start thinking about how you can use social
media to land your next job, make sure your presence on
social media isn’t inadvertently harming your career.
