SESSION 1 : Who is This Shepherd-King?
finally, in 1 Peter (5:4), Jesus is called the ‘Chief Shepherd’ who will
come again with rewards for his faithful ‘Under-Shepherds’.
Whilst all the above warrant our attention, the most detailed and
beautiful description of Jesus as our ‘Shepherd’ is found in Psalm 23.
This piece of scripture has brought untold comfort to millions over the
years, and yet, have we really mined out of it the treasure available to
those who will tenaciously dig? As I have intermittently studied and
researched this psalm over several years, I have been truly transformed
by the life, power, and depth of love contained within its words. As I
share some of my discoveries, I pray that you, the reader, will also be
touched and encouraged to examine them for yourselves. You will not
be disappointed!
‘The Lord is my Shepherd’. Notice how it doesn’t say a Lord or one
Lord—it says ‘The Lord’, which indicates His total supremacy and
priority over every other named lord. Jesus’ name is the name above all
names, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. He rules and reigns
with the highest authority, far above every other power. Next, I draw
your attention to the use of the personal pronoun ‘my’ before Shepherd.
This mighty Lord, who created the whole universe—who is far above
every opposing force we may have to face, now or in the future—says
through the Psalmist David, that He is our own personal Shepherd. He
is available to talk to, to confide in, to hear from, to receive from,
twenty-four seven. How awesome is that?
