CHAPTER 4

he next day, after breakfast and doing my chores, I called my

friends and told them to come right away, like it were an
emergency. And while I was waiting for them, I saw Mom

          crying in the kitchen.
I went to her and asked, “Mom, what’s wrong?”

She started crying more, and I didn’t really like that. It was kind of

          embarrassing.
She finally answered, “Oh, nothing. Just… adjusting to some bad

          news.”
“What bad news? Is it really that bad?”

Gosh, why did I ask that? It was stupid. Isn’t it obvious enough that it

          for your concern.”

I worry about my mom sometimes. She and Dad have been
fighting for a long time, and Eliott hasn’t been doing anything to help.

He doesn’t even seem to care. Well, I do. But my parents won’t tell me

what’s going on. I try to find out sometimes, but I think they have their
          reasons why.

Anyway, when the girls arrived, we went to my room and started
to pick something else from the list to do for Grade 8. Madelyn took
