CHAPTER 3
T
he next morning, I went downstairs to see Mom and Dad
fighting in the kitchen. I didn’t want to interrupt, but I also
didn’t like what they were doing. Nowadays, they fight a lot,
but since my brother and I are kind of used to it, we don’t really
complain—unless it’s in front of our friends or when we’re doing
something serious.
I asked, “Um, Mom, Dad... what’s going on?”
Mom turned to me and said, “Oh, honey, nothing is going on.
We’re just… just—”
Dad gave Mom a look that clearly meant Get it together before
saying, “Just talking about financial problems.”
“Yeah, financial problems. What do you need?” Mom said,
clearing her throat.
“Uh, I just wanted to see if there’s breakfast,” I mumbled.
“Oh, right.” Mom took a plate and dished out my food from the
pan on the stove.
“Mmm, eggs and waffles. Thanks, Mom!”
After I finished, I went back up to my room. But I still wondered
what they were talking about, because I knew they weren’t talking
about financial problems. So I tried to listen through the wall, but... all
I could hear was yelling—and something about a... relationship?
