CHAPTER 2
I
n my room, we were thinking about what to do for the S.M. Elisha
took a sheet of paper and started writing.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Oh, I’m making a checklist,” Elisha said, focusing on her writing.
“What checklist?” Madelyn asked, confused.
“It’s called ‘Fabulous Things to Do Before We Start Grade 8.’”
“Oh, wow,” I said, raising my eyebrows.
“That’s—” Madelyn started but got interrupted by Elisha.
“Amazing! Right?”
“Uh, yeah. That was definitely what I was about to say,” Madelyn
chuckled, rubbing her neck.
“If you don’t like it, then just say it—” Elisha sighed, already
crumpling the paper.
I stopped her. “No! I like it—in fact, I love it. I think this will make
our S.M. perfect!”
“Uh, yeah, it’s great, Elisha,” Madelyn added in a mutter.
Madelyn’s the kind of girl who genuinely enjoys lying—like, she
finds it fun. But deep down, she knows it messes with people’s feelings.
Elisha, on the other hand, gets hurt way too easily. One offhand
comment and she’s replaying it in her head for a week. They’ve known
each other forever, but when it comes to emotions, it’s like they forget
how close they are—like strangers avoiding the truth.
